Mowing your lawn keeps the grass healthy and attractive. If you have trouble walking or need to landscape a large piece of property, you may not find mowing to be a relaxing activity. A sulky for your mower allows you to “ride along” as the lawnmower cuts the grass. Here are some tips for finding the best sulky for your lawnmower.
Mower Compatibility
Before you start looking into types of sulky attachments, you should first determine what types of sulky attachments work with your lawnmower. You may be able to find some information on the lawnmower manufacturer website, but the best place to research compatibility with a company that specializes in sulky attachments.
Configuration
Sulky attachments are available in three basic configurations: single wheel, two-wheel, and platform. Single-wheel sulky attachments have one wheel with a small platform on either side. Using these types of sulky attachments requires a good deal of balance. Two-wheel designs have the platform between the wheels, and this is the style that is used most in uneven terrain and yards with hills. The third style is a platform that drags along the grass as you mow.
Size
The footprint of the sulky can make a difference in how well you can mow your lawn. If you have a lot of tight corners, trees, or shrubs, you will want a sulky attachment that has little to no impact on the maneuverability of the lawnmower. If you choose a sulky attachment that is too large, expect to do a good amount of backing up and moving forward to make those tight turns.
Weight Capacity
Check the weight capacity of your sulky attachment. If you weigh more than the limit, you risk digging into the soil and damaging your grass. If you buy a sulky with a higher weight capacity and you have a smaller frame, you may spend more money than needed. Find a good balance between budget and weight capacity.
Attachment Type
Sulky equipment attaches to your mower in two configurations. Some sulky attachments have a single metal plate that is attached with four bolts. Another configuration is two metal plates with a bar in between. These may be best suited for larger lawnmowers. There is a bar that extends from the attachment points to the platform where you stand. This bar has a swivel to move the sulky attachment with the lawnmower. Make sure that the attachment configuration of the sulky is compatible with your lawnmower.
