Common Lawn Care Questions Answered: How to Get Greener Grass?

Where the Green Grass Grows
Most every homeowner dreams of a beautiful expansive lawn with intense green grass. However, many aren’t aware that, although that green carpet may look deceptively simple, caring for a lawn is hard work and requires some knowledge of how to care for such a landscape. There are alternatives to this type of landscape, but for many of us, there’s just no substitute for the golf course green.

The most effective way to keep grass green is to keep it healthy. There are a number of things homeowner can do to assist in this process. First, mow regularly and at appropriate heights. A lawn that is left to grow for several weeks will become overgrown and scraggly, not to mention that many cities and homeowners’ associations have stringent requirements about overgrown grass. Beyond the unsightly appearance, allowing grass to overgrow shades out and kills shorter grass. Most guidelines recommend that grass be cut when it reaches approximately four inches. Additionally, no more than one third of its height should be cut at one time. Adhering to these guidelines can keep your lawn looking its best.

In addition to cutting at appropriate intervals, it is important to keep your mower blade sharp. A dull blade cut unevenly and tears rather than making a clean cut, leaving a ragged appearance and causing the grass to be susceptible to disease and infestations.

If you desire a specific shade of green, do your homework and choose the proper grass species. Be sure to consider whether the grass you choose is recommended for your Hardiness Zone, the average amount of maintenance required, and the species’ disease resistance.

The next step in keeping a healthy green lawn is to feed and water appropriately. Over or under feeding or watering can wreak havoc on an otherwise healthy lawn. Depending on your climate and the species of grass, you may need to seek a fertilizer with a specific nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium ratio. Your lawn’s watering needs will also be different if you live in a cool rainy climate as compared to a dry arid or hot humid climate. Timing is also important in watering your lawn. When possible, always water in the morning so that grass has time to dry before nightfall. Grass that stays wet for an extended period of time is susceptible to molds, mildews and diseases.

The last recommendation for keeping your lawn green is to eliminate weeds. There are several ways to do this, some more labor intensive than others. A chemical approach with a broad spectrum weed killer can cut down on the time and labor, but may result in an unsightly mess during the time you’re waiting for grass to grow in the dead empty spots. Be cautious when choosing a weed killer for some may damage some types of grass. Of course, the simplest but most time consuming and strenuous method of weed removal is manual extraction. However, this method also leaves empty spaces while waiting for lawn grass to fill in.

3 Weed-Eating Tips Everyone Needs to Know

Professional landscapers will tell you that the number one thing a homeowner can do for a great yard is to watch the weeds. These nasty, invasive plants can come in and dominate quickly. They soak up all the water and nutrients that your other plants need. What can you do to make sure your garden stays weed-free and healthy? Here are 3 weed-eating tips everyone needs to know.

Preparing
Break out the garden tools and get prepped. Trimmers are available in numerous sizes and power grades, and shaft styles to get the job done. Straight shafts are a good choice for multi-purpose use--common among professionals. Gas powered tools also give more range and flexibility than electric ones that keep you tethered.

Tip #1: Mind the String
The cutting power you desire is dependent on the string used in your trimmer. Whether you're cutting down weeds or giving the grass a trim--a longer string will help get the job done safely. A longer string will maximize your cutting power, but be mindful not to extend the string too far. If you feel the trimmer has excessive vibration, it can be an indicator that the string is too long. A few trials and you’ll find the length that works best with your trimmer.

Another thing to consider is the bump-feed mechanism that is emerging on popular trimmer models. This allows you to simply tap the trimmer to the ground to dispense more string. Be sure to keep the length of the string adequate with frequent taps. Keep in mind that if you notice the string is too long, stop and adjust before continuing its use.

Proper string length is an important thing to remember, especially when thinking about safety. As you get started, get familiar with the proper usage--head spin, handle adjustments, types of trimmer string, and safety. Protecting your body from flying debris is a good idea. Wearing goggles, long sleeves and pants, and closed-toed shoes will protect you from harm.

Tip #2: Moving Along
Take notice of the direction the head spins--counter clockwise spinning is the norm. Move the trimmer so that the leading edge continues in the same direction throughout the entire movement. A counterclockwise motion requires a right to left head movement while the opposite is necessary otherwise. The trimmer should always remain in the direction that moves away from your body.

Tip #3: On the Edge
Everyone wants that nice clean edge along their lawn, fence, and buildings, but before you start trimming away--be sure to clear the area to prevent unnecessary injury or damage.

Hold the trimmer to ensure that head is slightly angled towards the edge you are trimming. This will give you excellent control and help you monitor the evenness of your cuts. Following edges with a clean motion is best achieved when the head is aimed perpendicular to the ground coming from the inside of the garden bed or yard feature to create a clean and defined border.

Next time you’re driving down the road and see landscapers, take note of where they’re focusing their attention. Chances are that they’re major concern is weeds. Your dream landscape can only be achieved with active weed maintenance. Once one pops up, dozens follow, and before long, your lawn or garden is overwhelmed by these trespassing plants. Take control of your yard by staying safe and using these tips!
